Eastern Education Group champions inspirational colleagues and historical figures during International Women’s Day celebrations
Eastern Education Group hosted a series of events in celebration of International Women’s Day.
Each week, the group hosts a communication meeting for all staff and today an all-female cast gave personal and professional reflections on their inspirational colleagues.
After this meeting, an ‘Inspiring Women Conference’ took place at the University Professional Development Centre on Western Way.
Topics covered everybody from Elizabeth Fry to Boudicca and speakers discussed everything from psychology to playwrights.
One of the guest speakers was Charlie Nicholls, the course leader for the English and History degree at University Studies at West Suffolk College. Charlie said: “It (International Women’s Day) is an opportunity to celebrate the extraordinary achievements of extraordinary women. It’s become more important to me the longer I have worked here as we have a lot of mature female students whose lives have changed in some way. Everyday, I see extraordinary women do amazing things. For example, one of our students when through Covid home schooling seven children and came out with a 2:1 degree.”
In terms of her role models, Charlie added: “I spoke about Aphra Benn who was the first woman to earn her living as a commercial playwright and writer and she is one person who I find incredibly inspiring.”
Elsewhere, One Sixth Form College (that forms part of the group alongside West Suffolk College, Abbeygate Sixth Form College and University Studies at West Suffolk College) created a presentation on significant historical female figures that teachers shared with learners during the day.
And the rest of the group shared photos and citations relating to inspirational female colleagues on social media.
