FAQs

  • A Higher National Certificate (HNC) is a level 4 vocational qualification that takes one year to complete full-time or two years part-time. These are practical-based courses that can prepare you for either work after completion or studies at degree level.

  • A Higher National Diploma (HND) is a level 5 vocational qualification that follows on from the HNC.

    It takes two years to complete full-time (as this comprises the HNC year), or three to four years if you study part-time. HNDs are practical-based courses, ideal for those wanting to enter the workforce or study towards a bachelor’s degree.

    It is usual for students to enrol directly onto the HND programme. If students only complete one year, then they will exit with an HNC. However, it is possible to enrol on an HNC and then enrol onto an HND where students require a break in learning. This is usually appropriate for those students who are employed and undertaking qualifications as part of progression.

  • An HNC is equivalent to the first year at university. An HND is equivalent to two years at university. Upon completion of this qualification, you can undertake a top-up degree programme, which is a one-year full-time or two-year part-time, Level 6 qualification.

  • An HNC qualification sits at Level 4 of the Qualifications and Credit Framework, with an HND sitting at Level 5. While an HNC is equivalent to studying for a year at university, an HND equates to two years. You will require completion of an HNC and an HND to progress to a Level 6 top-up degree programme.

  • A Higher Technical Qualification (HTQ) is a Level 4 or 5 qualification designed to meet employer needs for technical skills, making it comparable to HNCs and HNDs.

    While HNCs and HNDs are well-established vocational qualifications, HTQs focus specifically on technical and occupational areas, preparing students for employment in high-demand sectors.

    Both HTQs and HNCs/HNDs can lead to similar career opportunities or further study, but HTQs have an emphasis on meeting specific industry standards.

  • Both are practical-based qualifications, ideal if you're looking to jump straight into work. You'll gain skills needed to move into your career, potentially working with local employers.
